Which dental treatments need more than one visit?

Why some treatments cannot be rushed

It is not about how busy a clinic is. Some restorations have to be made between appointments, and some treatments need the tooth or the gum to settle before the next stage. Compressing those does not make them faster, it makes them worse.

A clinic that tells you a two visit treatment needs two visits is being straight with you. One that promises to do everything in an afternoon is telling you something else.

Usually one appointment

A general consultation is thirty minutes. A dental cleaning is thirty. A filling is forty. Teeth whitening is an hour, and an extraction is an hour.

A root canal here is ninety minutes in a single appointment, though what follows it often is not. A dental post is thirty minutes, and dental implant placement is ninety.

Genuinely two appointments

Crowns are two appointments of about forty minutes each, because the crown itself has to be made in between. Veneers are the same, two appointments of about forty minutes.

A removable partial denture is two appointments of about thirty minutes, and a full denture is the same, for the same reason: something is being fabricated to fit you between the visits.

Root canal retreatment, where a previous root canal has failed, is two appointments of about an hour each.

Treatments with a visiting specialist

Deep cleaning, which is periodontal treatment below the gum line, is carried out by a visiting periodontist rather than a general dentist. It needs about a week of notice, so it cannot be booked for the next day.

Orthodontics is also handled by a visiting specialist and starts with a consultation rather than a self booked appointment. Root canals are carried out by a visiting endodontist.

None of this is a limitation, it is what having actual specialists involved means in a practice this size. But it does affect how far ahead you plan.

How to plan the trip

Start with a consultation and ask directly: how many appointments, and how close together can they be. That single question saves more wasted journeys than anything else on this page.
