A post gives a root-treated tooth enough structure to hold a crown.

What it is
When a tooth has had a root canal and little of the natural crown is left, there may not be enough tooth for a crown to grip. A post is a small rod cemented into one of the treated canals. It anchors a build-up of filling material, and that build-up is what the crown sits on.

- A crown is planned but there is little tooth left
- A previous post-and-crown has come out

- The canal prepared to receive the post
- The post fitted and cemented
- A core built up around it to support the crown
Afterwards
A post is a step towards a crown rather than a finished restoration, so a crown appointment normally follows.
