What it is
Orthodontic treatment moves teeth gradually into better positions using steady, gentle pressure, either from fixed braces bonded to the teeth or from a series of removable clear aligners. It changes both how the teeth look and how the upper and lower sets meet, which affects chewing and how evenly the teeth wear.

What the appointment involves
- An assessment with X-rays, photographs and impressions
- A plan setting out how the teeth will move and over what period
- Fitting of braces or the first set of aligners

Afterwards
Orthodontics is measured in months and years rather than in visits, and it needs regular appointments the whole way through. Retainers are worn afterwards, because teeth drift back towards where they started if nothing holds them. Worth planning carefully if you are travelling for treatment.
