Removing a tooth that cannot be saved, including wisdom teeth.
What it is
An extraction removes a tooth from its socket. It is normally the last option, considered when a tooth is too damaged or decayed to repair, when a wisdom tooth has no room, or when a tooth is causing an infection that will not clear.
When you might need it
- A tooth is broken below the gum line
- Decay too extensive to repair
- A wisdom tooth with no room to come through
- Infection that keeps coming back
What the appointment involves
- Numbing of the area
- The tooth loosened and removed
- The socket cleaned
- Instructions for healing, and stitches if needed
Afterwards
A blood clot forms in the socket and must be left alone: no rinsing hard, no straws, no smoking for the first day or two, since dislodging it is painful and slows healing. Soreness and swelling for a few days is normal. Ask about replacing the tooth, since neighbouring teeth tend to drift into the gap over time.
