Teeth Whitening

Professional whitening, done in the clinic in a single appointment.

Appointment 60 min

What it is

Whitening uses a peroxide gel to lift stains that have built up in the enamel from coffee, tea, tobacco and time. Done professionally, the gums are protected first and the strength and timing are controlled, which is the main difference from a shop-bought kit.

When you might need it

  • Teeth have yellowed gradually over the years
  • Staining from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco
  • You have an event coming up
  • Over-the-counter strips have not made a difference

What the appointment involves

  1. A check that the teeth and gums are healthy enough
  2. Protection of the gums and lips
  3. Application of the whitening gel
  4. Rinsing and a look at the result

Afterwards

Teeth can be sensitive for a day or two. Dark drinks and tobacco are usually avoided for the first couple of days, while the enamel is most likely to pick up new stains. Whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings.

This page explains the procedure in general terms so you know what you are looking at. It is not a diagnosis and not a treatment plan. What is right for you depends on your own teeth, and that needs an examination.
