Dental Cleaning
Routine cleaning removes what brushing at home cannot reach.
Appointment 30 min
What it is
A dental cleaning, or prophylaxis, removes plaque and hardened tartar from the teeth and along the gum line. Tartar cannot be brushed away once it forms, and it is what irritates gums and causes them to bleed and recede over time.
When you might need it
- Gums bleed when you brush or floss
- You can see or feel build-up on your teeth
- Persistent bad breath
- Six months to a year since your last cleaning
What the appointment involves
- Removal of plaque and tartar above the gum line
- Polishing to smooth the tooth surfaces
- A look at the health of the gums
Afterwards
Gums can feel slightly tender for a day or so, especially if there was a lot of build-up. Most people go straight back to normal eating and brushing.
This page explains the procedure in general terms so you know what you are looking at. It is not a diagnosis and not a treatment plan. What is right for you depends on your own teeth, and that needs an examination.
