What it is
A filling repairs a tooth damaged by decay. The decayed part is removed and the space is rebuilt with composite resin, a tooth-coloured material that is shaped and hardened in place so it blends with the surrounding tooth.
When you might need it
- A tooth is sensitive to sweet, hot or cold
- You can see a dark spot or a hole
- Food keeps catching in the same place
- A previous filling has chipped or fallen out
What the appointment involves
- Numbing of the area
- Removal of the decayed tissue
- The tooth rebuilt with resin, shaped and hardened
- A check that the bite feels right
Afterwards
The numbness wears off over a few hours. Mild sensitivity to temperature for a few days is common and usually settles on its own.
