Full Denture
Replaces a complete upper or lower arch of teeth.
What it is
A full denture replaces all the teeth in one arch. It rests on the gum and the bone underneath, and is shaped to support the lips and cheeks as well as to chew with. It is removed for cleaning and usually overnight.
When you might need it
- All the teeth in an arch are missing
- The remaining teeth cannot be saved
- An existing denture no longer fits
- Chewing and speaking have become difficult
What the appointment involves
- Impressions and bite records taken
- The denture made to those records
- At the second visit, fitting and adjustment
- Follow-up adjustments as the fit settles
Afterwards
Adjusting takes time. Eating starts with soft food and small pieces, and speech usually settles within a few weeks. Gums and bone change shape over the years, so a denture that fits well now will eventually need relining or replacing.
